Malaysia's Road Maintenance Funding Gap — What It Means for Suspension and Steering Wear

Road maintenance funding in Malaysia is falling short of what the works ministry says it actually needs. Deputy works minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan confirmed this week that the ministry received RM2 billion against an estimated RM4 billion requirement for road maintenance, and that he would join works minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi in seeking additional funding from the Ministry of Finance. With only half the requested budget available, the ministry said it has had to prioritise accident black spots and locations needing urgent repair, covering resurfacing, road furniture, and lighting improvements where funds allow.

 

Ahmad Maslan also shared a figure worth noting for context: road conditions account for about 13% of road accidents in Malaysia, compared with 81% attributed to human negligence and 7% to vehicle conditions. Road surface quality is a real, measurable factor in road safety — just a smaller one than driver behaviour. But there's a second, less-discussed side effect of underfunded road maintenance that doesn't show up in accident statistics at all: the cumulative wear it places on a vehicle's suspension and steering components, long before that wear becomes a safety issue.

How Poor Road Conditions Accelerate Suspension and Steering Wear

This isn't the first time the works ministry has flagged a maintenance funding gap, and the RM2 billion versus RM4 billion figures suggest it's likely to remain a recurring feature of Malaysia's road infrastructure rather than a temporary shortfall.   • Inspect suspension components on a mileage and age basis — a full suspension kit is generally worth a thorough check by 50,000 km or two years, with coil springs specifically reviewed around 100,000 km, regardless of whether a fault has already appeared
  • Watch for sag or visible corrosion — a vehicle sitting noticeably lower on one corner, or springs showing rust and paint loss, are signs the suspension has already absorbed more punishment than it should have
  • Listen for knocking noises over rough sections — a metallic knock from the strut mount area when cornering or crossing an uneven surface is a common early warning sign
  • Check steering feel periodically — looseness or vagueness in the steering that wasn't there before can point to wear in the tie rod ends or rack ends
