Xpeng X9 Air Suspension Recall: What It Means for Suspension Reliability in Malaysia
The Xpeng X9 air suspension recall announced this week is a useful reminder that even sophisticated, factory-fresh suspension systems can develop faults after years on the road. Bermaz Xpeng confirmed a recall campaign covering Xpeng X9 units built between August 8, 2023 and August 11, 2025, affecting 33,473 vehicles globally, after Xpeng identified reduced airtightness in the front air springs. In hot and humid conditions — conditions Malaysian roads know well — the seals can develop a gradual air leak, triggering malfunction alerts or, in more extreme cases, affecting vehicle handling. Affected owners in Malaysia will have their entire front air suspension assembly replaced free of charge, with the new system's warranty extended to eight years or 160,000 km, whichever comes first, and transferable to future owners.
It is a well-handled recall, and Bermaz Xpeng's response — full replacement, extended warranty, transferable coverage — sets a reasonable standard. But for the vast majority of vehicles on Malaysian roads, which use conventional coil-spring suspension rather than air suspension, the underlying lesson is the same one that applies to every suspension system regardless of technology: seals, bushings, and mounting components are wear items, and heat and humidity accelerate that wear.
Air suspension, found on select premium EVs and luxury SUVs, replaces steel coil springs with air-filled bellows that can adjust ride height and stiffness electronically. It offers genuine comfort and versatility benefits, but it also introduces more failure points — air springs, compressors, valves, and sensors all need to hold pressure and function correctly together.
The suspension system on the overwhelming majority of Malaysia's vehicle parc works differently. A conventional MacPherson strut setup relies on a mechanical chain of components working together:
None of these parts fail in isolation from the others. A cracked bump stop lets the damper bottom out harder on the next big pothole. A perished dust cover lets grit reach the seal, which shortens the life of the whole strut. That is the same principle behind the Xpeng recall, just expressed through a different mechanism — a compromised seal in one part of the system eventually threatens the performance of the whole assembly.
Xpeng's own explanation for the fault — reduced airtightness "with extended use in hot and humid conditions" — will sound familiar to anyone who has serviced a vehicle in Malaysia for any length of time. Rubber and polymer components in any suspension system, air-sprung or coil-sprung, are engineered to a temperature and humidity tolerance. Malaysia's climate sits at the demanding end of that range year-round, which is one reason rubber bushings, dust boots, and seals in local vehicles tend to show wear earlier than the same parts might in a more temperate market.

Whether a vehicle uses air suspension or the conventional coil-spring systems found in the overwhelming majority of cars, SUVs, and MPVs on Malaysian roads, the components in that chain — strut mounts, bump stops, dust covers, coil springs, control arms, and ball joints — are what stand between a comfortable, controlled ride and a compromised one.
