Malaysians are buying more SUVs than ever this year, and that shift has real consequences for the parts underneath them. Total industry volume for August 2026 came in at 71,428 units, down 3.2% from July's 73,615 units and 2.45% below August 2025. Yet within that softer month, the association said August recorded the highest monthly SUV sales of the year, at close to 24,000 units, driven largely by new model introductions. Year-to-date sales of 530,478 units remain 2.63% ahead of the same eight-month period in 2025, and the MAA expects momentum to hold through September.

In other words, fewer cars were sold overall last month, but more of them were SUVs. Every one of those vehicles will, sooner or later, need its suspension looked after.

Why Do SUVs Work Their Suspension Harder?

An SUV is not simply a larger car. Its proportions change the forces acting on every chassis component.

• Higher centre of gravity. A taller body leans more in corners and under braking. That extra movement is resisted by the anti-roll bar and its stabilizer links, which cycle constantly on winding roads and highway ramps.
• Greater mass. More kerb weight, and often more passengers and cargo, means higher loads through control arms, ball joints and wheel hub bearings every time the vehicle meets a pothole or speed hump.
• Larger wheels and tyres. Bigger, heavier wheel assemblies increase unsprung mass, so impacts are transmitted more sharply into bushings and joints.

Suspension wear is gradual, which is exactly why it is easy to ignore. These are the symptoms worth taking seriously:

• A knocking or clunking from the front over humps or rough patches, often a worn stabilizer link, ball joint or strut mount
• Metallic knocking when cornering or steering at low speed, which can point to a strut mount or its bearing
• Vague, wandering or heavy steering, especially at highway speeds
• Uneven or feathered tyre wear, a common sign of worn joints or bushings affecting alignment
• Excessive body roll or a floaty, unsettled feel over undulating roads
• Visible damage: torn dust boots, cracked bushings, a hardened or broken bump stop, or rust and sag on coil springs

• Control arms and ball joints hold the wheel in position and absorb vertical and braking loads. A worn ball joint affects alignment, steering precision and, in severe cases, safety.
• Stabilizer links are small but hard-working on high-riding vehicles. They are frequently the source of rattles and knocks, and worn links allow noticeably more body roll.
• Tie rod ends and rack ends transmit steering input. Play here shows up as imprecise steering and uneven tyre wear.
• Shock absorbers and strut mounts control body movement and isolate vibration. A tired damper on a heavy SUV lets the body bounce and pitch, which reduces tyre grip and can lengthen braking distances.
• Wheel hub bearings support the vehicle's weight at each corner. A humming or grinding noise that changes with road speed is a classic early sign.
